a to-do list
- spray paint all of my thumbtacks and push-pins a uniform colour
- read good books (i.e. Gilead, The Brothers K, and the Exploring Language Essays)
- clean the garage so that we can fit a car into it
- cook dinner at home, regularly
- de-clutter my paper and electronic life
fall means:
- wooly socks pulled up to my knees as i ride my bike to work,
- gutters full of vibrant leaves,
- mittened hands to hold,
- chilly mornings and warm afternoons,
- a latte rennaissance, and
- scarves, worn with flair.
things i really enjoy:
- harvest moons
- being awake in the back seat of the car on a quiet highway on a dark clear night, noticing how many stars there really are and feeling like a little kid again.
- receiving snail mail (an unoriginal, yet oh-so-pleasureful simple pleasure)
- a foamy latte in a to-go cup, enjoyed in conjunction with a good conversation, and followed by more good conversation while ripping the cup and sleeve into small pieces, possibly pasting parts of the mess into my journal with my (or natasha's) trusty glue stick.
- having an unexpected belly laugh with an old friend with whom you worried you had forgotten how to really laugh.
- office supplies that are found unexpectedly in my favorite colors. (especially exciting with paperclips and post-it notes.)
- hanging my feet off the end of the bed and falling asleep within minutes.
- being home on a weekday morning and seeing the sun shine through the window across the kitchen table
- having a meaningful -or even just unexpectedly pleasant - interaction with a stranger.
- all things rooibos.
- drinking out of pottery mugs that are really shiny and smooth
- weeding my garden
- falling asleep with a breeze blowing on my face (manufactured or natural - either will do)
- getting prints made out of my digital photographs
- watching my friends make difficult but rewarding choices
- file folder systems that work
- old, big, metal snow shovels that chip the packed snow off your sidewalk with the greatest of ease
- poems that do not exceed one page in length
- the brothers k, david james duncan
- the river why, david james duncan (am i a groupie if my two favorites are by him?)
- such a long journey, rohinton mistry
- 100 selected poems, e.e. cummings
top impulse purchases i have ever made:
- The yankee hotel foxtrot album by wilco. i literally bought it on a complete impulse, only having heard of wilco before, and fell in love with it slowly and perfectly. it remains to this day my favorite whole album.
- my pipe. i was looking at them with a friend of mine for her to take home to her brother as a gift at a market in montreux, switzerland, and the old french man who was helping us was just so great that i was inspired to buy one for myself. i never looked back.
- ordering "panna cotta with figs and port sauce" for dessert at a restaurant i went to earlier this month. i think i already blogged about this transcendent dessert eating experience, but it was an impulse - i don't often order dessert at restaurants, and i mean, does "fig and port sauce" really sound good to anyone? and what the heck is panna cotta? my impulses were rewarded.
